contemplating the Scriptures

Isaiah 42:1-9

Our reading is one of four Servant Songs, poems about God’s special agent who will fulfill his purpose for the faithful community. Though innocent, he will suffer for his people. Christians see this as a prediction of the coming of Jesus.

Hebrews 9:11-15

The author draws a comparison between a high priest’s offering of animal blood in the sanctuary of the Temple and Christ’s sacrifice of himself on the cross. He finds Christ’s offering much superior because it removes for ever all traces of guilt for past ungodly deeds.

John 12:1-11

Jesus has almost completed his journey to Jerusalem. He has raised Lazarus, brother of Martha and Mary, from the dead. Judas Iscariot does not understand the uniqueness of Jesus’ death. Helping the poor is important, but Jesus’ death and resurrection are even more so.
