contemplating the Scriptures

Isaiah 49:8-16a

The prophet announces the return of exiles from Babylon. It will be like a new exodus, and will include the peoples of all nations, not just Israel.

1 Corinthians 4:1-5

In Chapter 1, Paul decries the attachment of converts to particular apostles, but in Chapter 3, he asks himself: isn't it human to be attached to the person who brought you to Christ? Now he speaks of the qualities an apostle should have.

Matthew 6:24-34

Our reading is from the Sermon on the Mount. Jesus has just said that it is impossible to serve two masters: one cannot love both. Accumulation of wealth and providing for times of difficulty can cause people such anxiety that they fail to put God first in their lives.
