Saint Dominic
contemplating the Scriptures

Exodus 17:1-7

As God showed his power during their slavery, winning their freedom by inflicting plagues on the Egyptians, he now tests the Israelites’ faith in him, as provider and ruler. If they trust in him, he will save them. This reading is about one of those tests – but who tests whom?

Philippians 2:1-13

Paul is in prison, possibly facing being condemned to death. He writes to a church which he has founded, that at Philippi. He begins with a rhetorical question: of course there is “encouragement in Christ”.

Matthew 21:23-32

Jesus is in the final week of his earthly life. Soon he will be condemned by the Sanhedrin, of which the chief priests and elders are members. In the story of the fig tree, he has demonstrated to his disciples the importance of faith.
