contemplating the Scriptures

Exodus 20:1-4,7-9,12-20

The people of Israel are now at the foot of Mount Sinai. As commanded by God, Moses has consecrated the people. They are forbidden to ascend the mountain – and even to touch it. They are not permitted to see God. They now receive the guidelines for living known as the Ten Commandments.

Philippians 3:4b-14

Paul has warned his readers about those who try to convince them that being a Christian requires acceptance of Jewish law, including circumcision. True circumcision is of the heart – and not following legal precepts.

Matthew 21:33-46

As he teaches in the Temple, Jesus tells a second parable to (and about) the members of the Sanhedrin who have questioned his authority and the source of the power he has used to teach and to heal throughout his earthly ministry.
