contemplating the Scriptures

Acts 4:32-35

Only in Jerusalem (to our knowledge) did Christians share all of their possessions – and there only for a time. The first five chapters of Acts contain a number of summaries, of which this is one; they tend to generalize and idealize.

1 John 1:1-2:2

This book is set in a Christian community in which errant interpretations of the gospel according to John had developed. For example, some claimed that Jesus only appeared to become human and suffer. The author, writing in the name of the teachers of a church, emphasizes true beliefs.

John 20:19-31

Early on Easter Day, Mary Magdalene has recognized a man standing near the tomb as Jesus. She has told the disciples: “I have seen the Lord”. The disciples fear that they may suffer the same fate as their master.
