contemplating the Scriptures

1 Samuel 3:1-10,(11-20)

After many years of childlessness, Hannah has been given a son. In return, she has brought Samuel to the temple at Shiloh, saying, “For this child I prayed: and the Lord granted me the petition I made to him. Therefore I have lent him to the Lord; as long as he lives, he is given to the Lord.”. Samuel has entered the service of Eli, the priest.

2 Corinthians 4:5-12

It seems that there were people at Corinth who saw the reverses Paul suffered as evidence that he was not an authentic apostle, a true spokesman for Christ. Surely, they claimed, an apostle who displayed such weakness could not be a prime agent in spreading the good news.

Mark 2:23-3:6

Religious authorities have questioned Jesus’ practice of eating with people whose trades made them ritually unclean. They have also asked why his disciples do not fast as other disciples do. Now they confront him on another issue central to Jewish practice.
