Saint Dominic
contemplating the Scriptures

1 Kings 17:8-16,(17-24)

Ahab, King of Israel, and his wife Jezebel have “done evil in the sight of the Lord” by worshipping Baal, a Canaanite god, rather than the God of Israel. As punishment, Elijah has decreed a drought. God has provided him with food through ravens, but now his source of water, a seasonal stream, has dried up.

Galatians 1:11-24

Paul writes to the churches of Galatia, in central Asia Minor. He is troubled that some are deserting the true faith, under the influence of leaders who consider him not to be a true apostle and expect all Christians to follow Jewish practices.

Luke 7:11-17

Jesus has been approached by Jewish leaders to heal the slave of a centurion who has paid for the building of a synagogue. They argue that, despite being a Gentile, he is worthy to receive blessings God grants to Israel, his elect. But Jesus has healed him for his faith.
