contemplating the Scriptures

2 Kings 5:1-14

This story tells us that Israel's God is sovereign over Aram and all other lands – not only over Israel. It was usual to bring gifts when approaching a prophet. The word translated leprosy can refer to any of a number of skin diseases.

Galatians 6:1-16

Paul has written that we are called to freedom, but not licentiousness. He has called on the Galatians to live by, and to be guided by, the Spirit. Now he tells us what this means in practice.

Galatians 6:7-16

Paul comes to the end of his letter to the Christians in Galatia, a Roman province in central Asia Minor. He speaks figuratively of the law of Christ – the principle or norm of life in Christ is love.

Luke 10:1-11,16-20

Jesus has sent out the Twelve on the first missionary journey: one within Israel. Now he sends out others. According to conventional wisdom, there were seventy nations in the world, so Jesus is telling his disciples to reach out to the whole world.
