contemplating the Scriptures

Jeremiah 2:4-13

Despite God’s care of the Israelites in freeing them from slavery in Egypt, in nurturing them in the wilderness, and in bringing them to the Promised Land, Israel has forgotten about him, and has been worshipping foreign gods of no value for several generations. These gods, unlike our God, offer no hope for the future.

Hebrews 13:1-8,15-16

We now come to the conclusion of the letter. The author offers guidance regarding the shared life in the Christian community.

Luke 14:1,7-14

Jesus takes the opportunity while dining with a prominent Pharisee to say more about the qualifications for entry into the kingdom of heaven. While taking the lowest place at a banquet is good manners, Jesus also says that attendance at the heavenly banquet is at God’s invitation. God will not be fooled by one’s self-promotion.
