Saint Dominic
contemplating the Scriptures

Job 14:1-14

Job is being tested to determine whether his faith is God is because of the many blessings he has received, or is genuine. He has been deprived of his herds, children and health. His friends counsel him by asking questions. Our reading is one of his responses.

Lamentations 3:1-9,19-24

Jerusalem has repulsed the Babylonian army but now ,to the surprise of the nation, the conquerors have returned, taking and burning the city, and fortified towns, to the ground. In the rubble, a man expresses his lament, on behalf of the people.

1 Peter 4:1-8

When 1 Peter was written, Christians in Asia Minor were different from their neighbours: they were seen as anti-social and unpatriotic. Neighbourly relations are important; without them, you suffer.

Matthew 27:57-66

Jesus has died on the cross in mid afternoon on a Friday, the day before the Sabbath. Because the Jewish day begins at sundown, and no work can be done on the Sabbath, there are only a few hours in which to bury his body.

John 19:38-42

Jesus has been crucified with two others. When Roman soldiers hasten the death of the others by breaking their legs, they find that Jesus is already dead.
