St. Paul's Anglican Church, which dates from 1822, was the first building erected for public worship at Yamaska Mountain. It was constructed by the first generation of United Empire Loyalists, who formed the core of the English-speaking population in this area. The town received its name eight years later, when Archdeacon Mountain (afterwards Bishop of Quebec) suggested that since the Catfish River near the settlement was fordable they should combine the names of the Rev. Joseph Abbott and his wife, the former Harriet Bradford and name the town Abbotsford. The village is known today as St. Paul d'Abbotsford. One of the more famous sons of this congregation is their eldest child, John Joseph Caldwell Abbott, born in 1821, who was destined to become the first native-born Prime Minister of Canada. Beside the church is a stone Rectory built in 1822, and a community hall erected in 1898.
The Glebe Lands behind the church have been recently turned into parkland, and visitors are welcome to picnic there. The church, which has been designated an historic site, may be viewed by contacting the church wardens.
Although out-migration of English-speaking families has left us with only four Anglican families in Abbotsford, worship is still conducted at St. Paul's several times a year and each celebration becomes a special occasion. Please contact one of the church wardens for dates.
