Canon 24 - Clergy Pension PlanSection 6 - Survivor and Death Benefits |
![]() |
6.1 On the death of a Pensioner, there shall be payable to the surviving Eligible Spouse an annual pension equal to the percentage specified in column 3 of Schedule A (based on the Pensioner's date of retirement or, if earlier, the Normal Pension Date) of the amount of the pension then being received by the Pensioner. Such pension shall commence on the first day of the month following the death of the Pensioner and shall continue until the last day of the month in which the Eligible Spouse dies. 6.2 The annual pension being paid to each Spouse Pensioner shall be determined on the basis of the annual pension the Spouse Pensioner would have received on the date of death of the Pensioner had the minimum pensions below and the supplemental pension under Section 6.7 not been taken into account. At each date specified in Schedule B that the Surviving Spouse was in receipt of a pension, such pension shall be increased by the percentage shown for that date in column (1) of Schedule B or, if the Pensioner had made the irrevocable option under Section 5.2, column (1A) of Schedule B. Notwithstanding the above, the surviving Eligible Spouse of a Pensioner who was such on December 31, 1991 or of a Member or Past Member who had attained Normal Pension Date by December 31, 1991 and had joined the Plan prior to May 1, 1982, shall receive a minimum pension of $3,000 per annum. Also, a Spouse Pensioner who was such on May 1, 1982 shall receive a minimum pension $4,900 per annum. 6.3
6.4 On the death of a Pensioner leaving no surviving Eligible Spouse or Children, there shall be payable to the nominated beneficiary or, otherwise, to the Pensioner's estate, an amount equal to the aggregate personal assessments made while a Member, accumulated to the date of death with Credited Interest less the aggregate of any pension payments received from the Plan. 6.5 No benefits shall be paid to or in respect of any surviving spouse or Children of the spouse where the spousal relationship commenced after the pension or the disability pension commenced. 6.6 The pension being paid to each surviving eligible Child shall be determined in accordance with the amount that would have been payable had the rates of benefit shown in Column (4) of Schedule A been in effect on the date the pension originally commenced. 6.7 In the event that the Spouse Pensioner, who was such before December 31, 1991, was not entitled to receive a survivor's pension under the Canada or Quebec Pension Plans, a supplemental annual pension equal to $1,200 shall also be payable. 6.8 For the purpose of determining the benefits payable to a surviving Eligible Spouse or to surviving eligible children under this Section 6, a Member who dies after age 65, but prior to retirement, shall be deemed to have retired on the day before death and to be a Pensioner in receipt of a pension calculated on the basis of service to the deemed date of retirement. 6.9 In the event of the death of a Member or a Past Member prior to the earlier of retirement and the Normal Pension Date, the Commuted Value of the withdrawal benefit described in Sections 7.2 and 7.3 shall be payable in a lump sum to the Member's Eligible Spouse. In the absence of such Eligible Spouse, such Commuted Value shall be payable to the nominated beneficiary or, otherwise, to the estate of the Member.
