Curriculum Ideas on the WWW
It’s February, and the children’s workers among us can soon expect to see a flurry of curriculum order forms. Before you buy, pay a visit to www.childrensministry.net for a listing of curriculum publishers so you can see what’s available. Most of the publishers offer sample lessons. If you’re a Whole People of God user, you may know by now that it’s being replaced by Seasons of the Spirit, which you can visit at www.spiritseasons.com. And don’t forget www.storykeepers.com! Augsburg Fortress (a Lutheran publisher) has lectionary-based programs you can read about at www.afcanada.com. Clicking on their Sunday School Curriculum Comparison will give you details about their four curricula and how to get samples.
Gospel Light publications has been around since 1933. Founded by Henrietta C. Mears, this organization has been making Sunday School cirriculums available from what was known as one of the largest Sunday Schools in the world, at the First Presbyterian Church of Hollywood.

If you’re from a church that can’t afford to buy a curriculum, or you have a curriculum that you like, but you’d like to spice up a bit with different songs, games or crafts, then read on. Also be sure to check the Spring 2001 issue of Kidstuff, which lists several outstanding sites.

Specific Curriculum sites

www.ebibleteacher.com: Great site whose purpose is to provide computer resources for the Bible class, but does much more than that. After you’ve looked at the Power Point lessons and games for sale on the site, go to the page www.ebibleteacher.com/children/, where you will find a list of Old and New Testament lessons for primary and junior-age kids, worksheets, colouring pages, songs, activities and games. There’s a whole lot of good stuff here, so spend some time just looking around.

www.mssscrafts.com/curriculum: A site maintained by the Seventh-Day Adventists. Provides you with everything except the actual telling of the Bible story. Scads of really interesting resources, all neatly listed for you to click on. Lesson plans for different age groups. Again, a site that’s well worth spend some time exploring.

www.geocities.com/EnchantedForest/Glade/9517: A fun little site with a limited number of lesson listed thematically, so use the site’s search engine if you’re looking for something specific. Annoying Yahoo ad on the right hand side of the page, but you’ll find the “close” instruction at the bottom of it. Interesting prize ideas, lots of games before you get to the actual story. Very energetic; evangelistic in tone. There’s a link to the home site at the bottom of the page, or you can go directly to it: www.angelfire.com/ca/kidsandstuff for info about their program structure, puppet skits and a complete listing of games.

www.fishersofkids.com: Offers you over a year’s worth of lessons along with 150 puppet skits, downloadable in html or Word 7.0. You can look at sample outlines for individual quarters, as well as skits, by scrolling down the page past the download instructions. If you do decide to download, it only takes about 10 minutes but I think you need WinZip. Again, evangelical in tone (it features an altar call each week).

www.edupatterns.com: A free 1-year curriculum for kids aged 5 – 9, which follows the Bible chronologically and tells the story using a Bible Story mat that you make, along with Bible action figures you can either buy or make from patterns on the site. Each lesson features a Bible story, a game, a take-home sheet and sometimes a craft. Lovely site, reminiscent of Godly Play.

www.antelope-ebooks.com/religious.html: Have a look at this interesting page with resources for older children/teens as you scroll to the bottom, past “Christian Children’s Corner’. After that, click on “Games” or “Bible Lessons”. In Games, you click on the mouse graphic for the kid’s game, or on the title for the adult instructions. Unfortunately, there isn’t much free content here, but the mouse graphics are really cute!

www.kidology.org: Only a few lessons available for visitors, but worth checking out for some good ideas, especially the lesson on Bible Basics. You have to pay a membership fee of $24/year to have access to the entire site, which looks well maintained.

Other cool sites to visit:

www.wycliffe.org/catalog/BrightIdeas/home.htm: Part of the Wycliffe Bible Translators’ site, this page features about 10 free lessons and workpages on the theme of mission. Check out the “Desert Dweller’s Tea Time” lesson and the “Mom, Can I Have a Snack?” workpage.http://www.family.org/pplace/pi/: The companion website of Focus on the Family’s Plugged In magazine, which has articles on popular culture and reviews of films, TV shows and CDs. The website has reviews and a few articles. Check the archive before you cave in and buy your preteen the CD she’s been hounding you for.www.pacificpress.com: Check out the weekly puzzle.www.scoutsongs.com: When you’re looking for an action or other song to sing with your class. Discovered this site when I needed the words for “Down by the Riverside”.

Free The Children
Remember Craig Kielburger?

Craig Kielburger

He's been busy over the last several years. As you know from the press, Craig has been an advocate for children globally who find themselves enslaved to situations unthinkable to us.
Craig Kielburger, at only 15 years old, believes that humanity can change this situation. He is not willing to wait until the adults of this world find ways to change it. He is encouraging the children of the world to change it.
Craig has formed an organization called Free the Children: an international network of children helping children through representation, leadership and action. "Kids Can Free the Children" is the charitable portion of Free the Children. They provide leadership skills and citizenship opportunities to youth so that they can take responsibility for their world.

MISSING CHILDREN'S NETWORK
http://www.missingchildren.ca

Teddy BearThe Spring 1999 newsletter of this organisation, Hopeful News, notes that they now have four new pamphlets available in both French and English. They are:

  • Hope Bear's Home Alone Safety
  • Hope Bear's Tips for Safe Shopping
  • Teen Safety
  • Babysitting Safety

This network is a non-profit humanitarian organization based in Montreal, QC, Canada whose mission is to assist in the international search for missing children and to educate the public in order to prevent more children from becoming victims of aggression and exploitation.
The site lists the services available from the Network, eg. assisting families to search for children, distribution of photos of missing children, support and referral services, etc. It also tells you what steps to take if your child does go missing (which also by the way gives you ideas of what you need to keep and record about your child even if they never go missing). This helps keep in mind that the Network is very much interested in education and prevention.
Ardyth Robinson, who works in the Synod Office is a volunteer for the Network. She shares with us here her experience, and why it is important to her.

What Does Volunteering for the Network
Mean to You?

*
Being a volunteer for the Network is a privilege for me. I say this because it not only allows me to share my skills and knowledge, it enables personal growth through interaction with so many dedicated people sharing the same goals. It is a pleasure to be around other volunteers displaying a willingness to educate, offer support, (even show that it is "O.K." to have fun!!); basically giving ones "all" without a pricetag attached. I find that this is an easy thing to do because of the fact the Network is dedicated to the safety and rights of not only children but their parents as well, and thereby focusing on the family as a whole!
